Codes and Conventions of Romantic Comedys (Alex Elliott)

After doing alot of research into Romantic comedies, usually known as Romcoms and for a female audience, I have discovered many of the codes and conventions that usually appear.

  • Usually the introduction of the story is represented by a voice over, usually in 1st person told by the main character.
  • Credits sometimes appear along side the characters when on screen or just appear along the bottom, colours mostly plain such as white or black but sometimes can be red or pink, which are seen as the colours of love.
  • Over the next few scenes the boy meets the girl
  • Something then usually goes wrong like an argument or misunderstanding
  • One of the characters makes a big gesture and they fall back in love
  • They live happily ever after at the end

There are only a few romantic comedies that do not follow these simple codes and conventions.
