Research

We looked at the openings of films from different genres to get an idea of how movies are opened, setting the scene, time, location etc. This is what we found:

Romantic comedy: Two weeks notice; credits for film company, cast, with baby pictures next to them, with a upbeat soundtrack to set the happy atmosphere. Then came the title of the movie, then more credits for the directors etc. Then came the opening shot of a buliding, leading to a an argument between two characters.

Action: Smoking Aces; started with opening shot, with typed narration setting scene etc. Then came a two shot of two men in a police van having a conversation, with more subtitles setting time, place, and date.

Horror: The Amityville Horror; Started with subitles setting the year and time, close up on mans eyes and gloomy dark music in the background. Flashing imagery from the mans eyes, to a television, to a gun. Lighing and more flashing imagery showing murders taking place. Then came subtitles seting another date and time and then the title of the movie came up.

  1. The analysis of opening sequences needs to be in far more detail than this - use the MIGRAIN model and then consider the areas for textual analysis (camera work, mise-en-scene, sound, editing). this will help you to identify the typical conventions of an opening sequence. Remember you are required to analyse 3 opening sequences each and should name the work you post as an individual.

  2. You have gone very quiet here, guys - 3 of you sitting around compiling a storyboard is not especially time efficient!
